The scope of branding design and identity creation is enormous.

With applications ranging from your logo, website, and all the marketing content you put into the world. The foundation of brand awareness stems from a need for consistency in your branding.

What is the branding process? This will identify who you are and how the world perceives your organization. Brand creation is a critical process that encompasses defining a companyโ€™s identity, values, and goals.

Letโ€™s take a step back first. Itโ€™s easy to get overwhelmed with all the different parts surrounding branding. Not to mention all the graphic design lingoes paired with it. Hereโ€™s a simple breakdown of the standard terms used.

Brand Identity

Includes the tangible expressions of your brand (logo, typography, colors).

Thereโ€™s a lot to unpack when it comes to your brand, but it all begins with your logo. This is the visual foundation of your brand, branding strategy, and brand identity. It includes the tangible expressions of your brand elements (logo, typography, colors) that work cohesively to differentiate your brand from its competitors. Itโ€™s one of the very first interactions customers and clients have with a company, and thatโ€™s why itโ€™s essential to set the right impression.

Your mark should be a source of pride of ownership, and you should feel excited to share it with friends, family, and especially customers and clients. And the process should be equally exciting. So letโ€™s jump right into it.

Brand Strategy

A well-defined brand strategy is the foundation of any thriving brand identity. Imagine it as the comprehensive plan that outlines your objectives and ensures the cohesiveness of all your brand components. At its core, a brand strategy sets out your mission, vision, values, and unique value proposition. With this foundation, your brand can rise above the noise, grab attention, and get a loyal following.

Key elements of a brand strategy include:

  • Brand Positioning: This defines your brandโ€™s unique value proposition and competitive advantage. Itโ€™s about carving out a distinct place in the market that sets you apart from others.
  • Target Audience: Identifying your ideal customer is crucial. Understanding their needs, preferences, and behaviors allows you to tailor your brand to resonate with them effectively.
  • Brand Messaging: Developing a clear and consistent message that speaks directly to your target audience is essential. This messaging should reflect your brandโ€™s values and mission.
  • Brand Personality: Defining your brandโ€™s tone, voice, and personality traits helps humanize your brand, making it more relatable and engaging to your audience.
  • Brand Visual Identity: Creating a consistent visual identity that reflects your brandโ€™s personality and values is vital. This includes your logo, color palette, typography, and other visual elements.

While brand identity and messaging are important, theyโ€™re not the ultimate measure of a brandโ€™s success. If your promises donโ€™t match what you actually deliver, the consequences can be serious. At best, your audience might ignore a misaligned brand identity. At worst, it can damage trust and hurt your reputation. Simply put, actions matter more than wordsโ€”your brand needs to walk the walk to truly connect with your audience.

Where it all begins โ€” the logo process

Some people are shocked to hear how long a powerful logo can take to create. Mainly because the logo design seems small and contained. However, nailing a logo for your brand takes time. Itโ€™s a highly iterative process that involves much more than just a logo; it encompasses art, design, and research to develop a comprehensive brand identity.

This is because every successful design, whether from the ground up or a rebrand of an existing logo, will always involve the same steps. There are no shortcuts to designing a decisive mark short of an unlikely spark of magic. And although designers may be compared to visual magicians, we donโ€™t have the luxury to gamble with magic as professionals. Instead, we have a process.

By adhering to these branding design process steps, we can consistently achieve the desired results.

Information Gathering Branding Process

Any good creative agency knows that this is one of the most important and potentially time-consuming stages of logo creation. This is because, naturally, designers will not know your company as well as you do. That said, we take the time to learn your company inside-out first, to visualize it as itโ€™s meant to be envisioned.

Naturally, the goal for brand designers doing this is to get as close as possible to understanding your company as the owners do. This is so that we can create a mark that functions well and is aesthetically representative of the business. One that encompasses your values, mission, and how people view your brand. Is your brand serious, playful, or a mixture of both?

To achieve this, itโ€™s commonplace for clients to fill out a questionnaire known as a Branding Design Brief. A design brief is essentially a document with questions about your company. This brief will explore questions such as:

  • Who are your competitors?
  • Who is your target market?
  • What do you want your brand to like to be in the future?

Of course, we understand that filling out detailed, in-depth questions may not be the most exciting part of the process. That said, itโ€™s absolutely pivotal in helping the designer familiarize themselves with your company.

This is what enables us to properly diagnose solutions for your branding identity and also helps us understand what the tone and style should be moving forward. A brand designer plays a crucial role here, as they help businesses convey their goals and target audience through strategic design, ultimately assisting in establishing a memorable and distinct presence in the market.

Brand Design Research

Now that we know who you are directly from the source, we must dig deep and do our own research. This research revolves around learning more about your industry, history, and the perception it has from its clients. We figure out how we can make our clients have a mark that stands out among the competition. A common strategy used is building word mapsโ€”connecting related thoughts and ideas about the industry and the objective of branding and brand identity. This helps in aligning the design direction and core strategy elements of your dream brand, ensuring that the brand personality, target audience, and overall vision for the business are clearly defined.

The visual idea generation process always begins on paper. We explore potential avenues, drafting out rough potential directions. We iterate until we get it where it needs to be.

Then, we take our sketch to the digital realm to create a vector format. This means that no matter the size itโ€™s displayed, it will look crisp and in full resolution! We are talking from the size of a penny to a roadside billboard.

the words: your logoโ€”displayed three different ways. One sketched, the other a technical rendering and finally a finished version

Sketching & Idea Generation

Finally, this is when pencils and pens come in contact with the paper. We begin exercising our curiosity and creativity. Based on what weโ€™ve learned from the design brief and our own research, we begin sketching out every potential idea and direction for the design. Every idea, big or small, successful or not, is jotted down. No stone is left unturned. We cover our bases and try out as many ideas as possibleโ€”flexing and bending the limits of whatever direction they may lead. Lastly, we choose the ideas that are worth pursuing further.

Concept Development

Now itโ€™s time to elevate the process. We transition the ideas from paper to the digital realm, refining and perfecting the sketches into polished vector designs. This stage is all about precision, ensuring the design is versatileโ€”whether scaled large or smallโ€”and adaptable to various color formats.

We also dive deep into research to select the ideal typeface and color palette. Every choice is guided by the clientโ€™s unique style and the need to differentiate their brand from competitors. Each decision is carefully tailored to

Reflection & Review

After weโ€™ve pushed the final concepts to where they need to be, itโ€™s time for a bit of R&R (Reflection & Review). This is an easy step to overlook or dismiss, but it is absolutely crucial for creating the best version possible. We take this time to step back from our work and let things settle. This allows us to come back with fresh eyes to analyze and review our work objectively. After we have reviewed our work, we move on to finalizing the design.

Finalization & Approval

Once we reach a direction that we are excited about, we finalize it by ironing out all the rest of the details and making our final adjustments. Once we have final approval, itโ€™s time to celebrate a well-done job.

Visual Elements of Brand

The visual elements of your brand are the tangible aspects that create a lasting impression on your audience. These elements are crucial in establishing a consistent and recognizable brand identity. They include:

  • Logo: Your logo is the symbol or icon that represents your brand. Itโ€™s often the first visual element people associate with your brand, making it a critical component of your brand identity.
  • Color Palette: The selection of colors you use reflects your brandโ€™s personality and values. Colors evoke emotions and can significantly influence how your brand is perceived.
  • Typography: The fonts you choose to communicate your brandโ€™s message play a vital role in your visual identity. Typography should be consistent and align with your brandโ€™s overall style.
  • Imagery: The use of images, graphics, and other visual elements helps convey your brandโ€™s message. High-quality, relevant imagery can enhance your brandโ€™s appeal and engagement.
  • Patterns and Textures: Incorporating patterns and textures adds depth and interest to your brandโ€™s visual identity. These elements can help create a unique and memorable brand experience.

By carefully crafting and consistently applying these visual elements, you can create a strong, cohesive brand identity that stands out in the market. These elements work together to differentiate your brand from competitors and leave a lasting impression on your audience.

Branding Guidelines & Moving Forward

Although the logo is completed โ€” we donโ€™t just stop there. From there, we create the branding guidelines, which is a document that details the fonts/typefaces, colors, applications, and a general visual style guideline to help your branding stay on track. Itโ€™s a rulebook for your logo and future branding and advertising efforts.

This document is great to have because it reinforces how to keep your brand consistent across all campaigns. If you need to work with another creative firm, you can pass along your branding guidelines, and the transition will be much smoother. Since they have the rulebook, they will understand the ins and outs of staying consistent with your existing visual branding. Consistency is key!

Branding guidelines also ensure that everyone in your organization uses your branding elements correctly. We have seen countless times when someone goes rogue and fancy themselves a designer without adhering to guidelines, which can cause brand confusion. Organizations have branding guidelines for a reason, and no one should deviate from the correct useage of branding elements.

Most importantly, this saves time and money on your end because it takes the guesswork out of the equation. Designers will know precisely how to utilize your brand identity best and create content in line with what you already have.

Measuring Success and Continuous Improvement

Understanding the impact of your brand identity design is the compass that keeps your brand on course. By keeping a pulse on specific metrics, you can assess how effectively your brand is achieving its goals and creating meaningful connections with your audience.

  • Brand Recognition: This measures how well customers recognize and remember your brand. High brand recognition indicates a strong, memorable brand identity.
  • Brand Awareness: This metric assesses how aware customers are of your brand and its products or services. Increased brand awareness often leads to higher customer engagement and sales.
  • Customer Engagement: Tracking how customers interact with your brand and its offerings provides insights into their level of interest and loyalty.
  • Sales and Revenue: Ultimately, the impact of your brand identity design process on sales and revenue is a critical measure of success. A strong brand identity should contribute to increased sales and business growth.

But success isnโ€™t staticโ€”itโ€™s a journey. To keep your brand fresh and ahead of the curve, continuous improvement is non-negotiable. Hereโ€™s how you can keep your brand identity in top form:

  • Regularly assess your brandโ€™s alignment with your mission and goals.
  • Stay tuned into market trends and audience preferences.
  • Be bold enough to make adjustments that keep your identity relevant without losing your brandโ€™s essence.

In todayโ€™s ever-changing landscape, being proactive and adaptable is the secret to staying competitive. By consistently evaluating the effectiveness of your brand identity and embracing change, you ensure your brand remains not just strong but extraordinary in the eyes of your audience.

Are you considering a rebrand?

Rebranding isnโ€™t a decision to take lightlyโ€”it goes far beyond changing a name or logo. It requires a fundamental shift in how people perceive your company, involving updates to your visual identity, strategy, awareness, and positioning. If your current branding no longer aligns with your principles or goals, or if youโ€™re aiming to expand your audience, rebranding might be the solution.

With careful planning and execution, it can breathe new life into your business and strengthen customer connections. However, without proper strategy, it risks undermining your efforts, making thorough preparation essential. Also, make sure you take steps on how to rebrand without upsetting your audience.

Final Thoughts

Your logo is the hub of all of your branding efforts, so itโ€™s important to make sure the process is done correctly. Skipping the proper development process is risky because you may end up with something that doesnโ€™t perfectly suit your needs, which leads to a very short shelf life and the potential of having to revisit it sooner.

By adhering to a thoughtful, strategic process, you ensure a logo that is modern, flexible, and timelessโ€”a mark that aligns seamlessly with your vision and evolves with your brand.
